Still remember the World Contraception Day this year. Youth across Asia Pacific including Singapore will now have the opportunity to start talking contraception and have their voices heard at http://www.your-life-asia.com/. They are encouraged to make a pledge on World Contraception Day by leaving a ‘HEARTNOTE’, a virtual post-it note on the website.
In Singapore, local survey involved 200 youth aged 16 to 19 years old reveals an alarming lack of knowledge about contraception methods:
- Half (49%) of the sexually active youth have already had unprotected sex
- One quarter (25%) of them know of someone close who has had an unplanned pregnancy
- More than half (57%) of the respondents are not talking contraception with their current partner before having sex
- Over a third (39%) believe unreliable contraceptive methods - such as the withdrawal method - is effective
- One third (33%) are practicing unreliable methods including the withdrawal method (33%).
